چکیده

[1] We examine five different methods to estimate an earthquake’s magnitude using only P wave data for use in earthquake early warning systems. We test two input parameters: the maximum predominant period of the P wave (τp) and the displacement amplitude of the P wave’s vertical component (Pd). We apply our algorithms to 174 earthquakes 3.0<M< 8.0 from California and Japan that have also been used in previous calibration studies. We also apply them to 1992 0.2<M< 5.7 earthquakes that were processed by the real-time Earthquake Alarm Systems in California. We find that τp does not scale with magnitude for small earthquakes (M< 3) and is less accurate for largemagnitude earthquakes than using Pd alone. We derive a global scaling relation between Pd and magnitude and conclude that this global relationship provides the most accurate and robust magnitude estimate. This relationship could be applied in earthquake source zones around the world. Citation: Kuyuk, H. S., and R. M. Single station estimation of earthquake early warning parameters by using amplitude envelope curve

In this study, new empirical relationships to estimate key parameters in Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system including magnitude, epicentral distance and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) are introduced based on features of the initial portion of P-wave’s amplitude envelope curve. For this purpose, 226 time series recorded by bore-hole accelerometers of Japanese KiK-net are processed for earthq...

Early magnitude and potential damage zone estimates for the great Mw 9 Tohoku-Oki earthquake

[1] The Mw 9.0, 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake has reopened the discussion among the scientific community about the effectiveness of earthquake early warning for large events. A well-known problem with real-time procedures is the parameter saturation, which may lead to magnitude underestimation for large earthquakes. Here we measure the initial peak ground displacement and the predominant period by...

Short Note On the Properties of Predominant-Period Estimators for Earthquake Early Warning

Recent results suggest that measurements of the average “predominant period,” sp, of an earthquake using the first few seconds of P waves provide a rapid approximate estimate of magnitude that can be used for earthquake early warning systems. Although these prior studies demonstrate the empirical value of such an approach, we here examine the theoretical properties of the predominant period est...

Rapid Estimation of Earthquake Source and Ground-Motion Parameters for Earthquake Early Warning Using Data from a Single Three- Component Broadband or Strong-Motion Sensor

We propose a new algorithm to rapidly determine earthquake source and ground-motion parameters for earthquake early warning (EEW). This algorithm uses the acceleration, velocity, and displacement waveforms of a single three-component broadband (BB) or strong-motion (SM) sensor to perform real-time earthquake/noise discrimination and near/far source classification. When an earthquake is detected...

A comparison of tc and tp for magnitude estimation in earthquake early warning

[1] We determined the tc and tp parameters from the K-NET strong motion records of 16 earthquakes in Japan with moment magnitude (Mw) ranging from 6.0 to 8.3. A 0.075 Hz high-pass Butterworth filter was applied for determination of tc based on our previous studies. It was found that different pole selections of the Butterworth filter lead to different uncertainty in magnitude determination. Our...
